EVENT REPORT
The 13th Moorabbin Open was a great success with more than 130 players competing in 9 different grades. For the first time ever we included a junior grade which was very well received and we will continue that into 2009. We once again had lots of goodies for the check-in player bag including a free Powerade, Muesli Bar snack as well as specially made Moorabbin Open thongs for the first 100 players to enter the event. The Australiana theme was fun and we managed to get through the weekend without losing an eye from our corked hats!
The Women's Open saw reigning champion and 5 time winner Di Desira come back to defend her title. Sarah Fitz-Gerald had other ideas however and defeated Di in the final in 3 games. The Men's Open was interesting with an international player from Korea involved as well as local talents from interstate and the local region. Defending Champion Matthew Karwalski was in good form and made his way to final by defeating Dean Goble, Steve Salter and Steve Robinson to come up against Mike Corren in the final. Mike defeated Brad SOutar, Josh Cardwell and Rex Hedrick his lead in to the final. The number one and two seeds certainly proved that they should be contenders for the title as they battled through a 4 set match which included some excellent squash. Well done to Matt  for successfully defending his Moorabbin Open title.
Added to the entertainment this year was the thong throwing competition which attracted great interest. The challenge was to throw the thong into the box in any manner that you can. We ended up having about 5 people who got the thong into the box and we had the great "Thong-Off" at presentations. After a few rounds of attempt and even a foot fault, the grand winner was Scott Foster. The Trivia Quiz attracted many entries and believe it or not, no one got all 10 questions right! Two entries got 9 out of 10 so we decided the winner by Paper, Rock Scissors! Well done to Melody and Jessica. The Lolly Guessing competition was also hotly contested with Scott Foster and
Thanks to all of the companies who supplied products for the Moorabbin Open and to everyone for playing in such great spirit. Thanks especially to the Mahoney family for their continued sponsorship and the Edney family for being so wonderful to work with.

We look forward to seeing you at this event next year!
