EVENT REPORT
The 12th Moorabbin Open was a great success with more than 150 players competing in 9 different grades. The Women's Open saw reigning champion and 4 time winner Di Desira lead the charge to the finish line by defeating Fiona Greaves and Rebecca Jones to reach the final against Melody Francis. Melody reversed the recent result at the National Junior Championships by defeating Kimberley Bessell in three games as well as Sarah Cardwell in an earlier round. 
The Men's Open was interesting with international players from Malaysia and Korea involved as well as local talents from interstate and the local region. Number one seed, Matthew Karwalski was in good form and made his way to final by defeating Rex Hedrick, Steve Salter and Steve Robinson to come up against Cameron White. Cameron defeated Chris Chapman, Joseph Desira and Zac Alexander during his lead in to the final. The number one and two seeds certainly proved that they should be contenders for the title as they battled through a 5 set match which included some excellent squash and injury time to make things interesting. Well done to Cameron for being gracious in defeat and for Matt for winning his first Moorabbin Open title.
The Moorabbin Open included its usual features this year such as great show bags with self watering pots, drinks, muesli bars, note pads, discount vouchers and T-shirts. There is, however, a rather sad story to the Moorabbin Rodeo which we promoted during the lead-in to the event. The company arrived with the equipment, set it up, inflated the landing mat and pushed the go button to get the bull moving. Well, the bull did not even MOO. It was broken before we started. Whilst we were sad to see the bull retreat in shame, we arranged to have a snowboard rider put in its place. This saw plenty of players contending for the $100 prize for the person who could stay on it the longest. Cameron White and Matt Karwalski had a snowboard dual and Cameron was victorious. Oh, well, perhaps we can try the bull another year!
