The seventh Mattioli Bros Melbourne Open was once again a great success,
attracting some of the countries best players and beating last year's entry
level for participation. The Principal Sponsor, Mattioli Bros, was led by
David Walker who attended the event on the Sunday to watch the action.
The weekend got off to a different start with Kasey Brown (World Number
13) running a coaching session for Pollyanna Douglas. Pollyanna was the
winner of the recent Grays competition and received accommodation in
Melbourne, coaching with Kasey on the Friday, being coached by Kasey during
a match and her entry into the tournament. Well done Pollyanna for winning
and for taking part with such great spirit and thanks Kasey for providing
the prize!
Kasey Brown played in the Men's Open and whilst her first match was
unfortunately a "walk over" (her opponent was too scared to play
her - no, just kidding), Kasey's second match was against Steve Robinson
which provided some great action for the spectators. Steve went on to meet
fellow Victorian Mark Ikin in the final and after a great match Steve was
the victor in 4 games.
The Women's Open was interesting as well with Melody Francis making her
second Mattioli Bros Final in two years. Her opponent Amelia Pittock (World
Number 34) was
lining up for her second championship so was keen to defeat her rival in
Melody. Amelia came up with the skill to defeat Melody in three to claim her
second Mattioli Bros Melbourne Open title.
The weekend's squash was excellent and thanks to all players for
participating. We look forward to seeing you all again at this event next
year. Please see results and photos below.
