EVENT REPORT

In the largest ever Mattioli Bros Melbourne Open  to date, 103 competitors converged on the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday 8th July. It was a full-on weekend of squash and it was a most enjoyable weekend. Mattioli Bros once again supported this event with good prize money and we thank them and David Walker for their continued support. We had a long day of play on Saturday and we thank everyone for their patience coming into 7pm!
In the Men's Open, Dan Jenson, World #38 was number one seed and made the journey from Adelaide to compete, defeating Matias Toumi from Finland to make the final. Craig Rowland from Queensland also made the journey and was rewarded by defeating Cameron White in the Semi final to make the final against Dan. The Men's Open final was excellent to watch, great clean squash and some awesome rallies. The match looked much tighter than the score would lead you to believe. Thanks to Harvey for his refereeing skills.
The Women's Open was led by number one seed Dianne Desira, who was the favourite to take out the title for the second time. Number two seed Jemma Saxby was defeated by Peta Murphy, who was in turn was defeated by eventual finalist, Melody Francis. Melody had a great winning streak defeating Danielle Woodhams, Vanessa Pickerd and Peta to reach the final against Di. It was Melody's first Open final and it was great experience for her.  Di took the match in three strong games.
The graded events were very well attended and it was wonderful to see a big Women's A Grade. Jenine Riley was very strong and defeated all who stood in her way to the winners trophy. Maybe time for the Open Jenine??
Thanks to everyone for playing in such great spirit and we look forward to continuing this event in future years.
