"The Jim Bristow Cup"

Co-Presented by Inform Connection and the Victorian Masters Squash Association at the Moorabbin Squash Centre

May 24-25th, 2008

EVENT REPORT

The Fourth Masters Juniors Championships was conducted on May 24-25, 2008 and was held once again at the Moorabbin Squash Centre. We were delighted with the mixture of players who participated and it was a great social, supportive atmosphere. The doubles action is always the most entertaining to watch and it always closes the gap in player ability providing spectators with some great action. Many matches came down to the last point which was really exciting.

We had 9 sections this year of five players meaning that players received four matches throughout the weekend. Many had supporters who came and watched which added to the atmosphere.

Sunday afternoon after all of the matches were completed we did the final calculations and awarded the trophies to the victorious teams. In the highlight of the weekend for some, we once again awarded two Masters Apprentice Awards and these involve the chosen players receiving the following:

  • Full Squash Kit from Grays including a bag, racquet, shoes, clothing etc

  • A minimum of $500 towards squash coaching for the 12 months

  • Free entry into any squash tournament in Australia for the 12 months

This is an award worth in excess of $2000 per player and is aimed at providing support to junior players. We want to increase the likelihood that they keep playing and enjoying the sport and also give them the best chance to gain skills and develop a love of the sport. Congratulations must go to our recipients this year, Pollyanna Douglas and Jacob Oates. Photos appear on the photos page so please have a look and support these junior players wherever you may see them.

Thanks to Jim Bristow, Brian Davey and Terry Barlow for their hard work leading into the event and to Clara and Mike Edney for being such wonderful hosts. We look forward to seeing you next year, same time, same place, same bat channel........

Regards

Lisa Walton
